Smallville: v4.1
It was only a matter of time... until the fans made it better
Smallville v4.1 is the fans' version
of Season 4... a virtual season made up of 20 episodes. Visit the official site here
I'm on board as Productions Producer,
which means I get to do all the trailers, graphics, and the web design for the
official site. I've also written two episodes, helped on a third, and pitch in
with general plot development stuff.
Featured Downloads:
Every episodic and seasonal trailer can be found at the official site though
here are a few of my favourites...
Full length trailer created at the end of the
season, featuring clips from every episodic trailer and bringing you to
the Season's climax. Don't miss this one!
Music: Speed Me Towards Death by Rob Dougan (11.9Mb)
Full length trailer done at the beginning of
the season. This was the first video I made in Premiere Pro after
upgrading so I learned a lot from this, both on effects, and on vocal
editing techniques
Music: Requiem for a Dream (v4.1 Overture) - composed by Clint Mansell,
mixed by Becky (12.2Mb)
Lex has just taken over LuthorCorp, and begins to have
flashbacks of his time at Belle Reve. He discovers that a small subsidiary
company is responsible for the drug that made him insane, and Chloe and Clark
break into their lab to try and help... Things don't go to plan, as usual, and
Chloe and Lana end up in mortal peril...
Music: Clubbed to Death by Rob Dougan (mixed by Becky) (4.2Mb)
Chloe was given a necklace earlier in the season by Clark
that he got from Jor-El... it has remained a mystery until now. She sees a
representation of the symbol on the cave wall, though as soon as she touches it,
the cave works it's magic and imbues her with the power to read the cave
symbols. The episode deals with the Naman/Sageeth myth, making the link with
Superman's legendary 'S' symbol.
Music: Requiem for Dream - Two Towers Remix (mixed by
Becky)(4.5Mb)
Conclusion of episode 11 (above). The
necklace's power gives Chloe and Lex a frightening glimpse of things to
come, while everyone else is left to deal with the aftermath of the quake.
A LuthorCorp fundraiser takes a turn for the
worse when all the guests are taken hostage by a band of ruthless thieves.
Uses split screens inspired by "24".
Music: 'Unseen': Plunkett & MacLeane OST (composed by Craig
Armstrong) (mixed by Becky)(3.7Mb)
Conclusion of 'Scorched': the twins continue to
play with people's emotions, heating them up and cooling them down. Uses
various compositing techniques to give it an 'ice crystal' look.
Music: 'Orah': Stigmata OST (composed by Billy Corgan & Mike
Garson) (mixed by Becky)(3.9Mb)
So what is Smallville: v4.1?
In a nutshell, watch this
trailer. Essentially, v4.1 is a 'virtual season' created by
a group of dedicated Smallville fans, as an alternative to the real Season Four.
Any Smallville fan will tell you that S4 has left many fans unfulfilled: major
plotlines have been dropped without explanation, continuity has gone out of the
window, and fans generally don't like the treatment of the characters or
Superman Canon...
v4.1 is a response to this... fans
were leaving the show in droves, and it was hoped that we could provide an
alternative to 'cure' the wounds left by S4, providing a realistic development
that continued where S3 left off. It is made up of 20 written episodes (prose,
not script), and one is released each week.
So what's my involvement?
I've been dubbed the 'Productions
Producer'... I designed the website and help to upload episodes and goodies, I'm
penning two of the episodes myself, generally help out on seasonal
plot/character development, create 'extras' for the season as a whole and each
episode in the form of wallpapers, banners etc, and am also behind all the
trailers...
...trailers?
It all started with a short teaser
trailer, which was going to be the end of it... but then I got loads of ideas
for doing a full length 4-minute trailer. I just couldn't resist, and when I
installed Premiere Pro, I decided to break the ice with the v4.1 trailer... It
was a great way to learn all the new controls in PPro, as the video was unlike
anything I have done before (or since)... The first few minutes are a summary of
all the themes and plotlines that were left hanging at the end of Season 3, so I
used clips and audio, together with music that I had mixed especially for the
trailer: the whole thing built to a crescendo and then showed how v4.1 would
pick up the pieces. The full trailer went down really well, so I couldn't resist
doing them for the opening episodes: I just didn't stop!
I was really conscious to have a
consistent look and feel to all the v4.1 promotional material... the site, the
graphics, the logos... so it was important to have continuity throughout the
trailers. Not only do they use similar titles, but I'm very specific about the
music I use: I've adopted the
epic 'Requiem for a Dream' score by Clint Mansell as our theme, which features in
both season trailers and in several of the episodic trailers. I have used
several remixes of the song depending on the mood of the episode, and have taken
several score pieces from Buffy, such as those used for Home, Erin and
'Reality?'. Other soundtracks are used later in the season as the story becomes
darker and more intense, and you'll hear music from the
Plunkett and Maclean soundtrack, the Stigmata soundtrack, and the Season Finale
music thanks to Rob Dougan.
umm, why?
The episode trailers are like little
guinea pigs... the episodes themselves are very diverse, some being character
driven, others more action-based, and because they average at 40-60 seconds
each, they're a fantastic way to experiment with new techniques and styles. I
chat with the authors a few weeks before the release date to get a feel for the
episode so that I can start organising the music, and I'll try and get summaries
of key scenes so that I can manipulate clips to suit. It has made me much
quicker and much more decisive when editing: because episodes are on a tight
deadline, I don't have the luxury of weeks to do each one... the average trailer
takes about 6-8 hours to edit, not including any song mixing that I do, which
can take as long again if it's a complicated piece like the v4.1 Trailer, or an
episode like Quake or Siege.
It's undeniably hard work, but I find
it really fulfilling: it's a wonderful opportunity to be able to reinvent
Smallville on such a large scale, and a challenge
to create an alternative season from Smallville clips, creating our own
storylines and helping the readers to visualise the episodes as they read them.
Plus, the whole project is a real global effort: authors are from all over the
world, I can have storylines from the European continent, music from Canada, and
clips from America!

I've been downloading the vids from the Smallville 4.1 site but this is the first chance I've had to tell someone there what I thought of them. Seriously they're absolutely magnificent! If anything could ever get me inspired enough to start writing SV again it's those vids. I've actually downloaded and burned them to CD for later rewatching :-p They're just so absolutely incredible!
