Summary: The Phantom looks back on his relationship with Christine,
and realises the power of the gift she gave him...
My Comments: This is the first video I've done that's for
something other than Smallville, and is also the first non-AU piece that I've
done. It looks at how unworthy the Phantom believes himself of Christine's love,
and how her feelings are a 'gift' to him: it frees him from his solitude, from
his "gilded cage of pain", and almost makes him feel like a normal
person who is able to walk outside in the rain... The lyrics of the song really
drive the story and emotion in this: it is one of Annie Lennox's most powerful
performances, and the piano just gives me goosebumps every time I
hear it... that section of the video was edited first and is one of my favourite
moments.
The story is told from the Phantom's POV through his memories. He remembers
all his key moments with Christine, trying to suppress the hurtful memories,
though they inevitably surface and reveal the truth about what really happened:
that it's not the fairytale that he wants to remember. I think telling the story
in two segments like this takes us on a journey with the Phantom, allowing us to
appreciate the magnitude of his feelings for Christine, and his desperation at
the end of the film.
The 'look' of this was very important... there are an increasing number of
Phantom vids out there, which is fantastic, but because there are such limited
clips available, I wanted to use them in a unique way. I gave the video a very
'layered' look taking full advantage of Premiere Pro, building on the lessons I learned with
I
Bruise Easily... the look is incredibly soft, almost sensual. I
particularly like the way the Don Juan scene played out with the superimposed
flames and dancers... and the 'memory medley' that shows three of the
Phantom/Christine scenes blended together. Once the whole video was layered to
the hilt, I added to this by applying various Premiere filters to give it a
soft-focused look, which gives a wonderful glow to the skin tones and candles.
I've been a Phan since I was 7 years old, when my Gran gave me a cassette
recording of the then-new West End production: Phantom of the Opera... I quickly
learned all the words and have been hooked ever since (so about 18 years and
counting...) I saw the play in London's West End where it all began a few years
ago and was utterly mesmerized: we paid top price to get front row seats right
in the middle... it was truly breathtaking. So, to say I was a little nervous
watching the film is an understatement... how could it possibly live up to my
expectations? Well, it surpassed them, I saw it three times at the cinema and
was so captivated by Gerard Butler singing 'Music of the Night'... it gave me
tingles in my spine that stayed for the rest of the film.
Holy blue cow. I'm... stunned. Wonderful job on this, you know. What a heartbreaker for our dear Erik. *hugs* I'm so glad you put such a soft, gentle spin on things. I hate it when they portray him as a this bloodthirsty psycho (gee, thanks Christine >_> "lust for blood," my foot... It's a survival instinct, from what I can figure). Ahem, anyway, sorry about the rant. Just had to stick up for the man ^_^ And you had a minimum of Raoul! Thanks for that. Nice guy, but he doesn't hold a candle to Erik (yes, I'm aware that I'm preaching to the choir here). But yeah... again, loving this. I even saved it to my flashdrive so I can watch it at home. I hope you don't mind, but I just adore this! Now, I must go home and cry in a dark corner... *sniffles* Dangit, he deserves a happy ending!

Thanks for your comments, Tya and Nicole... Tya: I know what you mean about this vid as it's quite different to most of my others. It's not an AU, as it tells the 'Phantom' story but interpreted in the context of the Phantom's own memories of what happened, and how he feels about it. I'm glad you figured out what was going on from the video, though! Thanks for watching, and I really appreciate the feedback!

Well, I'm not really into the Phantom of Opera fandom (never had the occasion to read or see it, even if I really would like to!) but I saw it anyway... I'm not disapointed! Well, in fact, I was the first I saw it, because I was used to the clips telling a complete story... and I didn't know the music which I found a little strange...
But I listen some times the music without the clip, then I saw the clip again and all took sense ;)
Very well-done and lots of beautiful feelings... I love it!

I have downloaded all of your video's and am currently downloading the new POTO video. I was in shock when I watched them for the first time. You have done such and incredible job making them. I don't keep to many video's on my computer {I burn them to dvd's to keep from taking up to much room} but I can't get myself to delete your's. Keep up the great work!
